Dr. Nirmala Mani Adhikary’s doctoral research (Adhikary, 2012) has presented the Mimamsa philosophical theorization of communication. First, the Bhatta School of Mimamsa philosophy was explored from the perspective of communication, and its relevance for the communication discipline was examined. Then, classical Mimamsa texts were drawn on in order to theorize communication, thereby constructing the elements of communication process as envisioned in the philosophy. Finally, the
Bhatta-Mimamsa model of communication was presented, in which the elements of communication are classified under four key themes (karta, sadhan, itikartavyata, and sadhya). The model shows how the bhavakas (communicating parties) accomplish communication and how the persuasion for ‘karma’ is attained. This article describes the elements of Adhikary’s Bhatta-Mimamsa Model of Communication.
